What is SuperShare?

SuperShare is CalDigit's solution to the traditional SAN. It allows multiple users to to access the same pool of storage simultaneously with the same speed and ease as direct attached storage.

Who needs SuperShare?

Users who need more than one workstation to access the same storage simultaneously while maintaining a high speed throughput.

How is SuperShare different from a NAS?

SuperShare is built on PCIe technology levering a throughput of 20Gbs. This provides a speed that is not possible even over a 10Gig NAS based system.

How is SuperShare different from fibre based SANs?

SuperShare is built on PCIe technology levering a throughput of 20Gbs. Traditional fibre solutions are only 4Gbs or require multiple channels which can get very expensive. SuperShare only requires one cable and a low cost host adaptor for each workstation. Typical setups are about $11,000 cheaper than fibre. To put it simply, SuperShare cost less and is much faster.

What is the main advantage of SuperShare?

Speed and Cost. SuperShare uses PCIe technology instead of Fibre Channel, which is 5 times faster that traditional 4Gbps fibre. And because SuperShare is designed and built by CalDigit the cost is significantly lower than multiple vendor fibre solutions.

Why do you need SuperShare?

There are many benefits to shared storage and many ways to share. SuperShare provides ease of use and speed in a cost effective solution. When dealing with large files on a regular basis, a shared system will increase productivity by eliminating the process of copying files to each workstation. Also users can work simultaneously allowing project to be completed faster. With SuperShare it is as if everyone connected has access to super fast local storage.

What can SuperShare do for you?

SuperShare can increase productivity and increase your bottom line. Copying and transferring files is vital time that no one will ever get back. With SuperShare this process in completely eliminated. A shared pool of storage is available on every connected workstation, just like fast local storage.

How does SuperShare work?

The basic SuperShare workflow is easy. CalDigit storage (HDPro2 or HDPro-24) connects via external PCIe to the SuperShare hub. The SuperShare hub works much like a USB hub and allows the connection of multiple storage devices. The hub connects to the SuperShare switch, which acts much like network switch, managing the flow of data. The SuperShare switch then uses optical cables to connect to all workstations that need to access the pool of storage. Each workstation requires a low cost, SuperShare host adaptor card to connect to the optical cable from the SuperShare switch. Then install your choice of SAN software to manage the system, in conjunction with a gigabit network for metadata traffic.

What SAN Software works with SuperShare?

CalDigit provides the complete hardware solutions for SuperShare. SAN software is required and you can choose between, metaSAN, XSAN or StorNEXT.

What kind of storage can be used with SuperShare?

SuperShare can only support the CalDigit HDPro2 or the HDPro-24.

Can I use an existing HDPro?

Yes, a HDPro can be used, but the controller will need to be upgraded to the HDPro2 controller.

What is the recommended storage configuration?

At a minimum CalDigit recommends at least 2 HDPro2 8TB or one 24 HDPro 24TB. This is good for a typical 4 users setup. SuperShare is scalable and the more workstations the more storage will be needed.

What components are needed for the SuperShare System?

  • CalDigit Storage (HDPro2 or HDPro-24)
  • SuperShare Switch & Hub
  • Optical cable for each workstation (available in 10m, 30m, 50m & 100m, transceivers included with cable)
  • CalDigit SuperShare Host Adaptor Card for each workstation
  • Additional Items

  • Your choice of SAN software, one seat per workstation (metaSAN, XSAN or StorNEXT)
  • Gigabit ethernet network
