John McDonald

John McDonald is an Emmy Award winning filmmaker who has been producing and directing award winning films since 1970s. His portfolio includes "Cotton Eyed Joe" (1972), "Counter Attack: Crime in America" (1982), "The Ghost Mountain Experiment" (2007), and more. Mattel, Honda, Miller, Nissan, Jafra, and Pioneer are only a few of his past clients.

John is currently in the process of finishing his latest project, "Children of the Pear Garden", a documentary displaying the struggle to retain the cultural icons of the past in China's rapidly changing society. With CalDigit VR Minis in hand, John has spent the last six years working on this documentary and has over 100 hours of captured footage of his multiple travels throughout China and once to Iran following the lives of five struggling opera artists.


Here's what he had to say about his experience filming his latest work:

"I just came back from shooting my documentary in China and wanted to report that the CalDigit Mini VR drives saved the day. There was no way I could have lugged over the larger drives because of space and weight limitations. I needed drives that I could stuff in with my clothes or carry in my backpack. I took the drives everywhere, plugged them into my laptop at the end of the day and downloaded all my footage from my P2 cards. I used the second mini to backup everything from the first drive.

I was visiting a producer at his offices in China to show him some of my footage, and when he saw the small size of the drives he couldn't believe it. Now he wants them, too, for his editing and productions.

I have been using CalDigit drives since 2008 in my editing room and have never had any issues.
